The Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School, formerly New Pine Primary, is situated at Lascelles Terrace, Pinelands, St. Michael and is approximately two kilometres from, Bridgetown the capital of Barbados. It was built to relieve the overcrowding at the Pine Primary School that is located at St. Barnabas, St. Michael.
On September 19, 1966 the school was officially opened and catered to three hundred and forty (340) pupils. The staff then comprised of a Principal (Acting), Ms. Glendene Thompson, ten (10) teachers, a janitor and a watchman. Principals appointed subsequently were; Mr. Olton C. Hurley (1967), Mrs. Mildred Payne (1974), Mrs. Margery King (1984), Mrs. Matilda Prescod (1988), Mr. Kelvin E. Ward (1991) and Ms. Eulese Griffith (2003). Mrs. Glendine Thompson, our current principal joined the staff on April 18, 2006.
Several other persons acted as principal and they include Mrs. Sylvia Campbell ((1979), Mr. Darnley Marshall (1990), Mr. Lionel Eastmond (1993), Mr. Oliver Gibbs (1999), Mr. Morris Sobers (2001), Mr. Anthony Graham (2002) and Mrs. Margaret St. Hill-Pinder (2005).
A name change occurred in 1975 in honour of Mr. Charles Wilkinson Cumberbatch who was a former principal of St. Giles Boys’ School and later served as an Education Officer in the Ministry of Education.
Today, the school has a roll of six hundred and forty-eight pupils, an academic staff of thirty eight (38) and a non-academic staff made up of one (1) parent volunteer, one (1) clerk typist, three (3) janitors, six (6) school meals servers, one (1) general worker, two (2) watchmen and one (1) security guard.
